Definition of 'Adjuvants, Immunologic'

Substances that augment, stimulate, activate, potentiate, or modulate the immune response at either the cellular or humoral level. The classical agents (Freund's adjuvant, BCG, Corynebacterium parvum, et al.) contain bacterial antigens. Some are endogenous (e.g., histamine, interferon, transfer factor, tuftsin, interleukin-1). Their mode of action is either non-specific, resulting in increased immune responsiveness to a wide variety of antigens, or antigen-specific, i.e., affecting a restricted type of immune response to a narrow group of antigens. The therapeutic efficacy of many biological response modifiers is related to their antigen-specific immunoadjuvanticity.

Fine ambient particles from various sites in europe exerted a greater IgE adjuvant effect than coarse ambient particles in a mouse model.

30 Dec 2008 In the European Union (EU)-funded project Respiratory Allergy and Inflammation due to Ambient Particles (RAIAP), coarse and fine ambient particulate matter (PM) was collected at traffic dominated locations in Oslo, Rome, Lodz, and Amsterdam, in the ... Read more...

Correlation between direct ELISA, single epitope-based inhibition ELISA and pseudovirion-based neutralization assay for measuring anti-HPV-16 and anti-HPV-18 antibody response after vaccination with the AS04-adjuvanted HPV-16/18 cervical cancer vaccine.

9 Nov 2008 To monitor immune status during clinical trials and after vaccine registration, several assays have been developed to measure type-specific human papillomavirus (HPV) serum antibody levels. These include neutralization assays, single epitope-based ... Read more...

Adjuvants LT-K63 and CpG enhance the activation of dendritic cells in neonatal mice.

30 Oct 2008 Dendritic cells (DC) play a major role in the priming of T cells and initiating specific immune responses. We assessed the effects of the adjuvants LT-K63 and CpG on neonatal DC in vivo and in vitro. Cytokine levels (IL-10, IL-12p70 and ... Read more...
