Research News and Information

Definition of 'Adrenocorticotropic Hormone'

An anterior pituitary hormone that stimulates the ADRENAL CORTEX and its production of CORTICOSTEROIDS. ACTH is a 39-amino acid polypeptide of which the N-terminal 24-amino acid segment is identical in all species and contains the adrenocorticotrophic activity. Upon further tissue-specific processing, ACTH can yield ALPHA-MSH and corticotrophin-like intermediate lobe peptide (CLIP).

Common names: Adrenocorticotropic Hormone; Hormone, Adrenocorticotropic; ACTH (1-39); ACTH; Corticotrophin; Corticotropin; Corticotropin (1-39); Corticotrophin (1-39); Adrenocorticotrophic Hormone; Hormone, Adrenocorticotrophic; 1-39 ACTH; Adrenocorticotropin

Pretreatment with stress cortisol enhances the human systemic inflammatory response to bacterial endotoxin.

29 Sep 2009 OBJECTIVE: There is continuing controversy regarding the effect of glucocorticoids on a systemic inflammatory process. Based ona model of glucocorticoid action that includes both pro- and anti-inflammatory effects, we used the human experimental ... Read more...

[Treatment of pituitary adenomas]

25 Sep 2009 According to epidemiological studies, the prevalence of pituitary adenomas is 16.5% and the majority of them are "incidentalomas". The symptoms of pituitary disorders are often non-specific; disturbances of pituitary function, compression symptoms, ... Read more...

Basal, pulsatile, entropic (patterned), and spiky (staccato-like) properties of ACTH secretion: impact of age, gender, and body mass index.

13 Sep 2009 BACKGROUND: Age, gender, and BMI determine ultradian modes of LH and GH secretion, viz., pulsatile, basal, pattern-defined regularity [approximate entropy (ApEn)] and spikiness (sharp, brief excursions). Whether the same determinants apply to ACTH ... Read more...
