Alpha Rhythm
Research News and Information
Definition of 'Alpha Rhythm'One of four types of brain waves characterized by a relatively high voltage or amplitude and a frequency of 8-13 Hz. They constitute the majority of waves recorded by EEG registering the activity of the parietal and occipital lobes when the individual is awake, but relaxed with the eyes closed. Common names: Alpha Rhythm; Alpha Rhythms; Rhythm, Alpha; Rhythms, Alpha; Electroencephalography, Alpha Rhythm; Alpha Rhythm Electroencephalography; Alpha Rhythm Encephalography; Encephalography, Alpha Rhythm |

Several aspects of perception, particularly those pertaining to vision, are closely linked to the occipital alpha (alpha) rhythm. However, how the alpha rhythm relates to the activity of neurons that convey primary visual information is unknown. ... Read more...

Individual patterns of the electroencephalogram (EEG) in wakefulness and sleep are among the most heritable traits in humans, yet distinct genetic and neurochemical mechanisms underlying EEG phenotypes are largely unknown. A functional polymorphism ... Read more...

The thalamus and visual cortex are two key components associated with the alpha power of electroencephalography. However, their functional relationship remains to be elucidated. Here, we employ resting-state functional MRI to investigate the ... Read more...
