Alzheimer Disease - Drug therapy
Research News and Information
Definition of 'Alzheimer Disease'A degenerative disease of the BRAIN characterized by the insidious onset of DEMENTIA. Impairment of MEMORY, judgment, attention span, and problem solving skills are followed by severe APRAXIAS and a global loss of cognitive abilities. The condition primarily occurs after age 60, and is marked pathologically by severe cortical atrophy and the triad of SENILE PLAQUES; NEUROFIBRILLARY TANGLES; and NEUROPIL THREADS. Protein accumulation leads to CNS effects in Alzheimer's disease, frontotemporal dementia, and other age-related disorders. Common mechanisms may contribute to the progressive pathology in the different protein accumulation disorders, and ... Read more...
Suppression of glial HO-1 activity as a potential neurotherapeutic intervention in AD.
29 Sep 2009
The mechanisms responsible for oxidative damage, pathological brain iron deposition and mitochondrial insufficiency in Alzheimer disease (AD) remain enigmatic. Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) is a 32 kDa stress protein that catabolizes heme to biliverdin, ... Read more...
