Alzheimer Disease - Etiology
Research News and Information
Definition of 'Alzheimer Disease'A degenerative disease of the BRAIN characterized by the insidious onset of DEMENTIA. Impairment of MEMORY, judgment, attention span, and problem solving skills are followed by severe APRAXIAS and a global loss of cognitive abilities. The condition primarily occurs after age 60, and is marked pathologically by severe cortical atrophy and the triad of SENILE PLAQUES; NEUROFIBRILLARY TANGLES; and NEUROPIL THREADS. OBJECTIVE: The current review covers causes and risk factors of vascular dementia, including single infarct, multi-infarct and cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy. Comparisons and distinctions ... Read more...

Pathological studies have determined that fibrillar forms of amyloid-beta protein (Abeta) comprise the characteristic neuritic plaques in Alzheimer's disease (AD). These studies have also revealed significant inflammatory markers such as activated ... Read more...

The importance of DNA repair in the pathogenic mechanism of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is still poorly understood. Here, we report that a broad range of responses by DNA repair proteins plays a critical role in the regulation of inflammatory response ... Read more...
