Alzheimer Disease - Metabolism
Research News and Information
Definition of 'Alzheimer Disease'A degenerative disease of the BRAIN characterized by the insidious onset of DEMENTIA. Impairment of MEMORY, judgment, attention span, and problem solving skills are followed by severe APRAXIAS and a global loss of cognitive abilities. The condition primarily occurs after age 60, and is marked pathologically by severe cortical atrophy and the triad of SENILE PLAQUES; NEUROFIBRILLARY TANGLES; and NEUROPIL THREADS. Calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase IV (CaMKIV) plays a key role in the regulation of calcium-dependent gene expression. The expression of CaMKIV and the activation of CREB regulated genes are involved in memory and neuronal survival. We ... Read more...

The beta-amyloid (Abeta) peptide is associated with the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Evidence gathered over the last two decades suggests that the gradual accumulation of soluble and insoluble Abeta peptide species triggers a cascade of ... Read more...
