Anaerobic Threshold - Physiology
Research News and Information

Definition of 'Anaerobic Threshold'

The oxygen consumption level above which aerobic energy production is supplemented by anaerobic mechanisms during exercise, resulting in a sustained increase in lactate concentration and metabolic acidosis. The anaerobic threshold is affected by factors that modify oxygen delivery to the tissues; it is low in patients with heart disease. Methods of measurement include direct measure of lactate concentration, direct measurement of bicarbonate concentration, and gas exchange measurements.

Effect of adipose tissue on the sexual dimorphism in metabolic flexibility.

30 Oct 2009 Metabolic flexibility is the ability to transition between fat oxidation (fasting state) and glucose oxidation (fed state). We hypothesized that adipose tissue inflammation and lipid metabolism contribute to sexual dimorphism in metabolic ... Read more...

Physical performance characteristics in National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III champion female lacrosse athletes.

30 Jul 2009 The purpose of this study was to examine performance differences between starters and nonstarters and between different playing positions in collegiate female lacrosse athletes. Twenty-two subjects playing on a two-time defending National Champion ... Read more...

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing as a risk assessment method in non cardio-pulmonary surgery: a systematic review.

30 Jul 2009 This study reviews the predictive value of maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max) and anaerobic threshold, obtained through cardiopulmonary exercise testing, in calculating peri-operative morbidity and mortality in non-cardiopulmonary thoraco-abdominal ... Read more...
