Astigmatism - Physiopathology
Research News and Information

Definition of 'Astigmatism'

Unequal curvature of the refractive surfaces of the eye. Thus a point source of light cannot be brought to a point focus on the retina but is spread over a more or less diffuse area. This results from the radius of curvature in one plane being longer or shorter than the radius at right angles to it. (Dorland, 27th ed)

Phakic intraocular lens implantation for the correction of myopia: a report by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

30 Oct 2009 OBJECTIVE: To review the published literature for evaluation of the safety and outcomes of phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) implantation for the correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism. METHODS: Literature searches of the PubMed and Cochrane ... Read more...

Excimer laser correction of moderate to high astigmatism with a non-wavefront-guided aberration-free ablation profile: Six-month results.

29 Sep 2009 PURPOSE: To evaluate the postoperative clinical outcomes and higher-order aberrations (HOAs) in eyes with astigmatism greater than 2.00 diopters (D) that had laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) using a non-wavefront-guided aberration-free ablation ... Read more...

Effect of higher order aberrations on contrast sensitivity function in myopic eyes.

6 Sep 2009 PURPOSE: To evaluate the relation between higher order aberrations (HOAs) and contrast sensitivity function (CSF) in a population with myopia. METHODS: In this case series, HOAs were measured in 70 myopic eyes over a 6-mm pupil. Contrast sensitivity ... Read more...
