Atrial Fibrillation - Diagnosis
Research News and Information

Definition of 'Atrial Fibrillation'

Abnormal cardiac rhythm that is characterized by rapid, uncoordinated firing of electrical impulses in the upper chambers of the heart (HEART ATRIA). In such case, blood cannot be effectively pumped into the lower chambers of the heart (HEART VENTRICLES). It is caused by abnormal impulse generation.

Common names: Atrial Fibrillation; Atrial Fibrillations; Fibrillation, Atrial; Fibrillations, Atrial; Auricular Fibrillation; Auricular Fibrillations; Fibrillation, Auricular; Fibrillations, Auricular

Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation maintained by nonpulmonary vein sources can be predicted by dominant frequency analysis of atriopulmonary electrograms.

13 Dec 2009 INTRODUCTION: Increasing evidence suggests that high-frequency excitation in the pulmonary vein (PV) plays a dominant role in the maintenance of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF). However, in a certain population of patients, AF remains inducible ... Read more...

Electrocardiographic predictors of atrial fibrillation.

29 Sep 2009 BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most prevalent arrhythmia in the United States and accounts for more than 750,000 strokes per year. Noninvasive predictors of AF may help identify patients at risk of developing AF. Our objective was to ... Read more...

Association of the parameters derived from the relation between RR intervals and left ventricle performance with a history of heart failure in patients with atrial fibrillation.

29 Sep 2009 Parameters derived from the relation between RR intervals and left ventricular (LV) performance in atrial fibrillation (AF) have been useful to evaluate systolic LV function. This study investigated the association of these parameters with a history ... Read more...
