Atrial Fibrillation
Research News and Information
Definition of 'Atrial Fibrillation'Abnormal cardiac rhythm that is characterized by rapid, uncoordinated firing of electrical impulses in the upper chambers of the heart (HEART ATRIA). In such case, blood cannot be effectively pumped into the lower chambers of the heart (HEART VENTRICLES). It is caused by abnormal impulse generation. Common names: Atrial Fibrillation; Atrial Fibrillations; Fibrillation, Atrial; Fibrillations, Atrial; Auricular Fibrillation; Auricular Fibrillations; Fibrillation, Auricular; Fibrillations, Auricular |

INTRODUCTION: Increasing evidence suggests that high-frequency excitation in the pulmonary vein (PV) plays a dominant role in the maintenance of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF). However, in a certain population of patients, AF remains inducible ... Read more...

PURPOSE: Improvements in enabling technology have facilitated minimal access techniques to the surgical ablation of atrial fibrillation. A variety of lesion sets (usually targeting only the left atrium) have been used in attempts to ablate atrial ... Read more...

The prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AF) is increasing in older patients faster than that of any other arrhythmia. AF is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Data on AF in European populations are scarce. The aim of this study was to ... Read more...
