Definition of 'Bicarbonates'

Inorganic salts that contain the -HCO3 radical. They are an important factor in determining the pH of the blood and the concentration of bicarbonate ions is regulated by the kidney. Levels in the blood are an index of the alkali reserve or buffering capacity.

Common names: Bicarbonates; Hydrogen Carbonates; Carbonates, Hydrogen; Carbonic Acid Ions; Ions, Carbonic Acid; Hydrogen Carbonate; Carbonate, Hydrogen; Bicarbonate Ion; Bicarbonate Ions; Ions, Bicarbonate

The taste of carbonation.

14 Oct 2009 Carbonated beverages are commonly available and immensely popular, but little is known about the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the perception of carbonation in the mouth. In mammals, carbonation elicits both somatosensory and ... Read more...

Negative shift in the glycine reversal potential mediated by a Ca2+- and pH-dependent mechanism in interneurons.

14 Sep 2009 Cartwheel cells are glycinergic auditory interneurons which fire Na(+)- and Ca(2+)-dependent spike bursts, termed complex spikes, and which synapse on both principal cells and one another. The reversal potential for glycine (E(gly)) can be ... Read more...

Crystal structure of the catalytic domain of the tumor-associated human carbonic anhydrase IX.

12 Sep 2009 Carbonic anhydrase (CA) IX is a plasma membrane-associated member of the alpha-CA enzyme family, which is involved in solid tumor acidification. It is a marker of tumor hypoxia and a prognostic factor in several human cancers. An aberrant increase ... Read more...
