The optogenetic catechism.

14 Oct 2009 An emerging set of methods enables an experimental dialogue with biological systems composed of many interacting cell types--in particular, with neural circuits in the brain. These methods are sometimes called "optogenetic" because they use ... Read more...

Fungal pretreatment of lignocellulose by Phanerochaete chrysosporium to produce ethanol from rice straw.

13 Oct 2009 Phanerochaete chrysosporium is a wood-rot fungus that is capable of degrading lignin via its lignolytic system. In this study, an environmentally friendly fungal pretreatment process that produces less inhibitory substances than conventional methods ... Read more...

Modification of protein crystal packing by systematic mutations of surface residues: implications on biotemplating and crystal porosity.

13 Oct 2009 Bioinspired nano-scale biotemplating for the development of novel composite materials has recently culminated in several demonstrations of nano-structured hybrid materials. Protein crystals, routinely prepared for the elucidation of protein 3D ... Read more...
