Cell Polarity - Physiology
Research News and Information

Definition of 'Cell Polarity'

Orientation of intracellular structures especially with respect to the apical and basolateral domains of the plasma membrane. Polarized cells must direct proteins from the Golgi apparatus to the appropriate domain since tight junctions prevent proteins from diffusing between the two domains.

Common names: Cell Polarity; Cell Polarities; Polarities, Cell; Polarity, Cell

Guidance receptors find their places in the axonal order.

27 Oct 2009 In this issue of Neuron, Katsuki and colleagues show that cell-autonomous mechanisms divide Drosophila axons into proximal and distal compartments. Axon guidance receptors selectively localize to one compartment. A diffusion barrier exists near the ... Read more...

AnkyrinG is required to maintain axo-dendritic polarity in vivo.

22 Sep 2009 Neurons are highly polarized cells that extend a single axon and several dendrites. Studies with cultured neurons indicate that the proximal portion of the axon, denoted as the axon initial segment (AIS), maintains neuronal polarity in vitro. The ... Read more...

Planar cell polarity and the kidney.

15 Sep 2009 Planar cell polarity (PCP) is a form of spatial organization in tissue that was first described in Drosophila melanogaster. PCP plays a critical conserved role in several aspects of mammalian development. Exciting data implicate PCP in normal kidney ... Read more...
