Cholinesterase Inhibitors - Administration & dosage
Research News and Information
Definition of 'Cholinesterase Inhibitors'Drugs that inhibit cholinesterases. The neurotransmitter ACETYLCHOLINE is rapidly hydrolyzed, and thereby inactivated, by cholinesterases. When cholinesterases are inhibited, the action of endogenously released acetylcholine at cholinergic synapses is potentiated. Cholinesterase inhibitors are widely used clinically for their potentiation of cholinergic inputs to the gastrointestinal tract and urinary bladder, the eye, and skeletal muscles; they are also used for their effects on the heart and the central nervous system. |

Many cell types possess the essential components for a non-neuronal cholinergic system. These components include acetylcholine, choline acetyltransferase, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. Studies have indicated that ... Read more...
Efficacy of rivastigmine for cognitive symptoms in Parkinson disease with dementia.
29 Jun 2009
BACKGROUND: Impairment of multiple neurotransmitter networks, including acetylcholine, may contribute to the cognitive impairment in patients with Parkinson disease with dementia (PDD). Therefore, cholinesterase inhibitors might improve cognitive ... Read more...
