Clonidine - Adverse effects
Research News and Information

Definition of 'Clonidine'

An alpha-2 adrenergic agonist that crosses the blood-brain barrier. Clonidine acts centrally by reducing sympathetic tone, resulting in a fall in diastolic and systolic blood pressure and a reduction in heart rate. It also acts peripherally, and this peripheral activity may be responsible for the transient increase in blood pressure seen during rapid intravenous administration. A phase II clinical trial to assess the safety of clonidine in acute organophosphorus pesticide poisoning.

18 Aug 2009 BACKGROUND: An estimated 2-3 million people are acutely poisoned by organophosphorus pesticides each year, mostly in the developing world. There is a pressing need for new affordable antidotes and clonidine has been shown to be effective in animal ... Read more...

Clonidine as an adjuvant to local anesthetics for peripheral nerve and plexus blocks: a meta-analysis of randomized trials.

30 Jul 2009 The effect of adding clonidine to local anesthetics for nerve or plexus blocks remains unclear. The authors searched for randomized placebo-controlled trials testing the impact of adding clonidine to local anesthetics for peripheral single-injection ... Read more...

[Severe differed respiratory depression after intrathecal administration of morphine and clonidine on a 70-year-old patient]

5 Jul 2009 We report a case of severe and differed respiratory depression to a 70-year-old patient after spinal anaesthesia for prostatic adenomectomy. Ten milligram of bupivacaine, 30 microg of clonidine and 100 microg of morphine has been administrated ... Read more...
