Clonidine - Therapeutic use
Research News and Information
Definition of 'Clonidine'An alpha-2 adrenergic agonist that crosses the blood-brain barrier. Clonidine acts centrally by reducing sympathetic tone, resulting in a fall in diastolic and systolic blood pressure and a reduction in heart rate. It also acts peripherally, and this peripheral activity may be responsible for the transient increase in blood pressure seen during rapid intravenous administration. OBJECTIVE: To review the literature regarding the use of alpha(2)-agonists in the treatment and prevention of iatrogenic opioid abstinence syndrome (IOAS) in critically ill patients. DATA SOURCES: Primary literature was identified through a search ... Read more...
Clonidine in perioperative medicine and intensive care unit: more than an anti-hypertensive drug.
30 Jul 2009
Clonidine is classified as an imidazoline and it is the prototypical alpha-2 receptor agonists. It has been used for several years to treat hypertension. It has also been used, "off label", for a variety of purposes, including opioid and anesthetic ... Read more...
Buprenorphine for the management of opioid withdrawal.
6 Jul 2009
BACKGROUND: Managed withdrawal is a necessary step prior to drug-free treatment or as the end point of substitution treatment. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of interventions involving the use of buprenorphine to manage opioid withdrawal, ... Read more...
