Dentate Gyrus - Physiology
Research News and Information
Definition of 'Dentate Gyrus'Gray matter situated above the gyrus hippocampi. It is composed of three layers. The molecular layer is continuous with the HIPPOCAMPUS in the hippocampal fissure. The granular layer consists of closely arranged spherical or oval neurons, called granule cells, whose AXONS pass through the polymorphic layer ending on the DENDRITES of pyramidal cells in the hippocampus. Common names: Dentate Gyrus; Gyrus, Dentate; Gyrus Dentatus; Fascia Dentata; Dentata, Fascia; Dentate Fascia; Fascia, Dentate |

LTD induction suppresses LTP-induced hippocampal adult neurogenesis.
21 Sep 2009
Neurogenesis persists in certain adult brain regions including the dentate gyrus. Recent studies have shown that long-term potentiation (LTP) induction in the afferent pathway enhances adult neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus. Here, we investigated ... Read more...

The molecular underpinnings of exploration and its link to learning and memory remain poorly understood. Here we show that inducible, modest overexpression of neuronal calcium sensor 1 (Ncs1) selectively in the adult murine dentate gyrus (DG) ... Read more...

Both conscious and unconscious memory mechanisms contribute to the rewarding effects of nicotine and other drugs of abuse. In this issue of Neuron, Tang and Dani use in vivo measures of synaptic plasticity in freely moving mice to link ... Read more...
