Research News and Information

Definition of 'Elastic Modulus'

Numerical expression indicating the measure of stiffness in a material. It is defined by the ratio of stress in a unit area of substance to the resulting deformation (strain). This allows the behavior of a material under load (such as bone) to be calculated.

Common names: Elastic Modulus; Modulus, Elastic; Young's Modulus; Modulus, Young's; Youngs Modulus; Modulus of Elasticity; Elasticity Modulus; Young Modulus; Modulus, Young

Impact of hydrodynamics on oral biofilm strength.

29 Sep 2009 Mechanical removal of oral biofilms is ubiquitously accepted as the best way to prevent caries and periodontal diseases. Removal effectiveness strongly depends on biofilm strength. To investigate the influence of hydrodynamics on oral biofilm ... Read more...

Tissue-engineered polyethylene oxide/chitosan scaffolds as potential substitutes for articular cartilage.

29 Sep 2009 Applications of composite scaffolds comprising polyethylene oxide (PEO) and chitosan to the culture of bovine knee chondrocytes (BKC) were investigated. Here, PEO and chitosan with various weight ratios were crosslinked, refrigerated at -80 degrees ... Read more...

Characterization of photocrosslinked alginate hydrogels for nucleus pulposus cell encapsulation.

29 Sep 2009 Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration is a significant health concern in the USA. Tissue engineering strategies have the potential to provide a viable alternative to current treatments. Nevertheless, such approaches require a suitable biomaterial ... Read more...
