Research News and Information
Definition of 'Epilepsy'A disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of paroxysmal brain dysfunction due to a sudden, disorderly, and excessive neuronal discharge. Epilepsy classification systems are generally based upon: (1) clinical features of the seizure episodes (e.g., motor seizure), (2) etiology (e.g., post-traumatic), (3) anatomic site of seizure origin (e.g., frontal lobe seizure), (4) tendency to spread to other structures in the brain, and (5) temporal patterns (e.g., nocturnal epilepsy). Relationships between essential cortical language sites and subcortical pathways.
29 Sep 2009
OBJECT: Maps produced using either electrical stimulation or functional imaging have demonstrated a distributed network of cortical regions involved in expressive and receptive language tasks. The pattern of connectivity among components of this ... Read more...
Hemispherotomy: efficacy and analysis of seizure recurrence.
29 Sep 2009
OBJECT: Hemispherotomy generally is performed in hemiparetic patients with severe, intractable epilepsy arising from one cerebral hemisphere. In this study, the authors evaluate the efficacy of hemispherotomy and present an analysis of the factors ... Read more...
Challenges in the surgical treatment of epilepsy patients with cortical dysplasia.
29 Sep 2009
Cortical dysplasia (CD) is the most common malformation of cortical development in epilepsy surgery patients. Patients with mild Palmini type I CD represent about 50% of the surgical cases, and these lesions tend to occur most often in the temporal ... Read more...
