Definition of 'Epilepsy'A disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of paroxysmal brain dysfunction due to a sudden, disorderly, and excessive neuronal discharge. Epilepsy classification systems are generally based upon: (1) clinical features of the seizure episodes (e.g., motor seizure), (2) etiology (e.g., post-traumatic), (3) anatomic site of seizure origin (e.g., frontal lobe seizure), (4) tendency to spread to other structures in the brain, and (5) temporal patterns (e.g., nocturnal epilepsy). PURPOSE: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is used increasingly as adjunctive therapy for refractory epilepsy. Studies of VNS in children report mainly seizure frequency reduction as a measure of efficacy and clinical details are often scanty. We report ... Read more...

BACKGROUND: Despite the introduction of many new antiepileptic drugs during recent years, about one third of the epilepsy population continue to have drug-resistant seizures. We present two hypotheses on mechanisms of drug-resistant epileptic ... Read more...

PURPOSE: We undertook a systematic review of the evidence on disparities in epilepsy with a focus on North American data (Canada, United States, and the English-speaking Caribbean). METHODS: We identified and evaluated: access to and outcomes ... Read more...
