Exotropia - Etiology
Research News and Information
Definition of 'Exotropia'A form of ocular misalignment where the visual axes diverge inappropriately. For example, medial rectus muscle weakness may produce this condition as the affected eye will deviate laterally upon attempted forward gaze. An exotropia occurs due to the relatively unopposed force exerted on the eye by the lateral rectus muscle, which pulls the eye in an outward direction. Common names: Exotropia; Exodeviation; Exodeviations; Strabismus, Divergent; Divergent Strabismus; Secondary Exotropia; Exotropia, Secondary; Monocular Exotropia; Exotropia, Monocular; Primary Exotropia; Exotropia, Primary; Alternating Exotropia; Exotropia, Alternating; Exophoria |

Exotropia caused by pit viper snakebite.
30 Jul 2009
Pit viper snake venom exerts a mildly neurotoxic effect that may rarely lead to neurotoxic complications, such as paralytic strabismus. Extraocular muscles are known to be particularly susceptible to this complication. In previously reported cases, ... Read more...

Acquired cyclic exotropia and hypotropia.
30 May 2009
Cyclic exotropia, a very rare condition, consists of periods of exotropia and orthotropia alternating on a regular, most commonly 48-hour, cycle. Cyclic vertical deviations, including cyclic oculomotor nerve palsy, also are extremely uncommon. ... Read more...
