Galectin 3 - Metabolism
Research News and Information

Definition of 'Galectin 3'

A multifunctional galactin initially discovered as a macrophage antigen that binds to IMMUNOGLOBULIN E, and as 29-35-kDa lectin that binds LAMININ. It is involved in a variety of biological events including interactions with galactose-containing glycoconjugates, cell proliferation, CELL DIFFERENTIATION, and APOPTOSIS.

Immunohistochemical localization of galectin-3 in the pig retina during postnatal development.

24 Sep 2009 PURPOSE: The differential level and localization of galectin-3 protein were examined in the retinas of two-day-old pigs and six-month-old pigs. METHODS: The retinas sampled from two-day-old and six-month-old pigs were analyzed by western blot and ... Read more...

Synthetic galectin-3 inhibitor increases metastatic cancer cell sensitivity to taxol-induced apoptosis in vitro and in vivo.

30 Aug 2009 At present, there is no efficient curative therapy for cancer patients with advanced metastatic disease. Targeting of antiapoptotic molecules acting on the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway could potentially augment antimetastatic effect of cytotoxic ... Read more...

A mechanism for incorporation of galectin-3 into the spliceosome through its association with U1 snRNP.

16 Aug 2009 Previously, we showed that galectin-1 and galectin-3 are redundant pre-mRNA splicing factors associated with the spliceosome throughout the splicing pathway. Here we present evidence for the association of galectin-3 with snRNPs outside of the ... Read more...
