GAP-43 Protein - Metabolism
Research News and Information

Definition of 'GAP-43 Protein'

A nervous tissue specific protein which is highly expressed in NEURONS during development and NERVE REGENERATION. It has been implicated in neurite outgrowth, long-term potentiation, SIGNAL TRANSDUCTION, and NEUROTRANSMITTER release. (From Neurotoxicology 1994;15(1):41-7) It is also a substrate of PROTEIN KINASE C.

Common names: GAP-43 Protein; GAP 43 Protein; B-50 Protein; B 50 Protein; GAP-43; Phosphoprotein F1; Growth-Associated Protein 43; Growth Associated Protein 43; Nerve Growth Cone Membrane Protein GAP-43; Nerve Growth Cone Membrane Protein GAP 43; Neuromodulin; Phosphoprotein B-50; Phosphoprotein B 50

Combined intrinsic and extrinsic neuronal mechanisms facilitate bridging axonal regeneration one year after spinal cord injury.

27 Oct 2009 Despite advances in promoting axonal regeneration after acute spinal cord injury (SCI), elicitation of bridging axon regeneration after chronic SCI remains a formidable challenge. We report that combinatorial therapies administered 6 weeks, and as ... Read more...

Increased expression of the growth-associated protein 43 gene in the sensorimotor cortex of the macaque monkey after lesioning the lateral corticospinal tract.

18 Oct 2009 To investigate the neural basis for functional recovery of the cerebral cortex following spinal cord injury, we measured the expression of growth-associated protein 43 (GAP-43), which is involved in the process of synaptic sprouting. We determined ... Read more...

Changes in markers of neuronal and glial plasticity after cortical injury induced by food restriction.

2 Sep 2009 The regenerative capacity of the adult central nervous system is limited. We investigated whether short-term food restriction (FR; 50% of the daily food intake lasting 3 months) modulates processes of brain plasticity after cortical injury. ... Read more...
