Definition of 'Geniculate Bodies'

Part of the diencephalon inferior to the caudal end of the dorsal thalamus. Includes the lateral geniculate body which relays visual impulses from the optic tract to the calcarine cortex, and the medial geniculate body which relays auditory impulses from the lateral lemniscus to the auditory cortex.

Involvement of the thalamocortical loop in the spontaneous switching of percepts in auditory streaming.

5 Oct 2009 Perceptual grouping of successive frequency components, namely, auditory streaming, is essential for auditory scene analysis. Prolonged listening to an unchanging triplet-tone sequence produces a series of illusory switches between a single coherent ... Read more...

Temporal framing of thalamic relay-mode firing by phasic inhibition during the alpha rhythm.

8 Sep 2009 Several aspects of perception, particularly those pertaining to vision, are closely linked to the occipital alpha (alpha) rhythm. However, how the alpha rhythm relates to the activity of neurons that convey primary visual information is unknown. ... Read more...

The spatiotemporal frequency tuning of LGN receptive field facilitates neural discrimination of natural stimuli.

7 Sep 2009 The efficient coding hypothesis suggests that the early visual system is optimized to represent stimuli in the natural environment. While it is believed that LGN processing removes the redundant information of natural scenes, it is not clear whether ... Read more...
