Glioma
Research News and Information
Definition of 'Glioma'Benign and malignant central nervous system neoplasms derived from glial cells (i.e., astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and ependymocytes). Astrocytes may give rise to astrocytomas (ASTROCYTOMA) or glioblastoma multiforme (see GLIOBLASTOMA). Oligodendrocytes give rise to oligodendrogliomas (OLIGODENDROGLIOMA) and ependymocytes may undergo transformation to become EPENDYMOMA; CHOROID PLEXUS NEOPLASMS; or colloid cysts of the third ventricle. Alexander disease: An important mimicker of focal brainstem glioma.
13 Dec 2009
We report the case of a 6-year-old male who was referred to a tertiary oncology center with a focal brainstem lesion which was presumed to be neoplastic. Due to the symmetric nature of the lesion on magnetic resonance imaging, the evaluation was ... Read more...
PARP1 expression in pediatric central nervous system tumors.
13 Dec 2009
BACKGROUND: Despite advances in therapy, outcome in many high-grade pediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumors remains poor. The focus of neuro-oncology research has thus turned towards identifying novel therapeutic targets. Poly(ADP-ribose) ... Read more...
Ceramide metabolism determines glioma cell resistance to chemotherapy.
29 Nov 2009
Tumor cell resistance to chemotherapy constitutes a major problem in the treatment of malignant tumors. We here investigated the role of ceramide metabolism for the resistance of glioma cells to treatment with the chemotherapeutic drug, gemcitabine. ... Read more...
