The hair follicle is lined by a cellular inner and outer root sheath of epidermal origin and is invested with a fibrous sheath derived from the dermis. (Stedman, 26th ed) Follicles of very long hairs extend into the subcutaneous layer of tissue under the SKIN.

Distribution of P2X(3)-immunoreactive fibers in hairy and glabrous skin of the rat.

18 Jun 2009 The skin is innervated by two populations of unmyelinated sensory fibers, the peptidergic and nonpeptidergic, which transmit nociceptive information to the central nervous system. The peptidergic population expresses neuropeptides such as substance ... Read more...

Coding of pleasant touch by unmyelinated afferents in humans.

10 Apr 2009 Pleasant touch sensations may begin with neural coding in the periphery by specific afferents. We found that during soft brush stroking, low-threshold unmyelinated mechanoreceptors (C-tactile), but not myelinated afferents, responded most vigorously ... Read more...

Skin and hair follicle innervation in experimental models: a guide for the exact and reproducible evaluation of neuronal plasticity.

28 Feb 2008 The remodelling of skin innervation is an instructive example of neuronal plasticity in the peripheral nervous system. Cutaneous innervation displays dramatic plasticity during morphogenesis, adult remodelling, skin diseases and after skin nerve ... Read more...
