Research News and Information

Definition of 'Heart Septal Defects, Ventricular'

Developmental abnormalities in any portion of the VENTRICULAR SEPTUM resulting in abnormal communications between the two lower chambers of the heart. Classification of ventricular septal defects is based on location of the communication, such as perimembranous, inlet, outlet (infundibular), central muscular, marginal muscular, or apical muscular defect.

Common names: Heart Septal Defects, Ventricular; Ventricular Septal Defect; Ventricular Septal Defects; Defect, Ventricular Septal; Septal Defect, Ventricular; Septal Defects, Ventricular; Intraventricular Septal Defects; Defect, Intraventricular Septal; Defects, Intraventricular Septal

Transcatheter closure of postoperative residual perimembranous ventricular septal defects.

30 Oct 2009 BACKGROUND: The presence of postoperative residual perimembranous ventricular septal defect (PmVSD) is relatively uncommon. However, reoperation might be associated with an increased surgical risk. Transcatheter device closure is an alternative ... Read more...

Two-patch repair for atrioventricular septal defect with mitral aneurysm.

29 Sep 2009 We experienced an unusual case of partial atrioventricular septal defect in an elderly patient. A preoperative ultrasonic cardiogram revealed the mitral leaflet pouching toward the right atrium and suggested the presence of a ventricular septal ... Read more...

The functional intraoperative pulmonary blood flow study is a more sensitive predictor than preoperative anatomy for right ventricular pressure and physiologic tolerance of ventricular septal defect closure after complete unifocalization in patients with pulmonary atresia, ventricular septal defect, and major aortopulmonary collaterals.

13 Sep 2009 BACKGROUND: The objective was to determine if intraoperative pulmonary artery (PA) flow studies after complete unifocalization correlate with postrepair hemodynamics for pulmonary atresia (PA), ventricular septal defects (VSD), and major ... Read more...
