Definition of 'Hypoxia, Brain'

A reduction in brain oxygen supply due to ANOXEMIA (a reduced amount of oxygen being carried in the blood by HEMOGLOBIN), or to a restriction of the blood supply to the brain, or both. Severe hypoxia is referred to as anoxia, and is a relatively common cause of injury to the central nervous system. Prolonged brain anoxia may lead to BRAIN DEATH or a PERSISTENT VEGETATIVE STATE. Histologically, this condition is characterized by neuronal loss which is most prominent in the HIPPOCAMPUS; GLOBUS PALLIDUS; CEREBELLUM; and inferior olives.

[Effects of piracetam therapy in a case of Lance-Adams syndrome]

30 Aug 2009 We report a 17-year-old female patient with Lance-Adams syndrome caused by anoxic encephalopathy during a severe attack of bronchial asthma. She had difficulty in writing because of action myoclonus in her arms. She also exhibited freezing gait and ... Read more...

Protection of hippocampal slices against hypoxia/hypoglycemia injury by a Gynostemma pentaphyllum extract.

27 Apr 2009 In transverse hippcampus slices a short period of hypoxia/hypoglycemia induced by perfusion with O(2)/glucose-free medium caused early loss and incomplete restoration of evoked field potentials to only 50% in the CA(1) region. We report about a ... Read more...

Resuscitation at birth and cognition at 8 years of age: a cohort study.

18 Apr 2009 BACKGROUND: Mild cerebral injury might cause subtle defects in cognitive function that are only detectable as the child grows older. Our aim was to determine whether infants receiving resuscitation after birth, but with no symptoms of ... Read more...
