Definition of 'Inositol'

An isomer of glucose that has traditionally been considered to be a B vitamin although it has an uncertain status as a vitamin and a deficiency syndrome has not been identified in man. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p1379) Inositol phospholipids are important in signal transduction.

Common names: Inositol; Myoinositol; Chiro-Inositol; Chiro Inositol; Mesoinositol

Characterization of the null murine sodium/myo-inositol cotransporter 1 (Smit1 or Slc5a3) phenotype: myo-inositol rescue is independent of expression of its cognate mitochondrial ribosomal protein subunit 6 (Mrps6) gene and of phosphatidylinositol levels in neonatal brain.

30 Aug 2008 Ablation of the murine Slc5a3 gene results in severe myo-inositol (Ins) deficiency and congenital central apnea due to abnormal respiratory rhythmogenesis. The lethal knockout phenotype may be rescued by supplementing the maternal drinking water ... Read more...

Biosynthesis and functions of mycothiol, the unique protective thiol of Actinobacteria.

30 Aug 2008 Mycothiol (MSH; AcCys-GlcN-Ins) is the major thiol found in Actinobacteria and has many of the functions of glutathione, which is the dominant thiol in other bacteria and eukaryotes but is absent in Actinobacteria. MSH functions as a protected ... Read more...

Intramolecular direct aldol reactions of sugar diketones: syntheses of valiolamine and validoxylamine G.

24 Aug 2008 A new and stereoselective intramolecular direct aldol reaction of diketones derived from carbohydrates has been developed to construct carbocycles with D-gluco-, D-galacto-, D-manno-, and L-ido-configurations. The stereochemical outcome of the ... Read more...
