Definition of 'Insulin-Like Growth Factor I'

A well-characterized basic peptide believed to be secreted by the liver and to circulate in the blood. It has growth-regulating, insulin-like, and mitogenic activities. This growth factor has a major, but not absolute, dependence on GROWTH HORMONE. It is believed to be mainly active in adults in contrast to INSULIN-LIKE GROWTH FACTOR II, which is a major fetal growth factor.

Common names: Insulin-Like Growth Factor I; Insulin-Like Somatomedin Peptide I; Insulin Like Somatomedin Peptide I; Somatomedin C; IGF-I-SmC; IGF-1; IGF-I; Insulin Like Growth Factor I

Acromegaly pathogenesis and treatment.

31 Oct 2009 Dysregulated growth hormone (GH) hypersecretion is usually caused by a GH-secreting pituitary adenoma and leads to acromegaly - a disorder of disproportionate skeletal, tissue, and organ growth. High GH and IGF1 levels lead to comorbidities ... Read more...

Genistein and resveratrol, alone and in combination, suppress prostate cancer in SV-40 tag rats.

30 Oct 2009 BACKGROUND: Chemoprevention utilizing dietary agents is an effective means to slow the development of prostate cancer. We evaluated the potential additive and synergistic effects of genistein and resveratrol for suppressing prostate cancer in the ... Read more...

Mesenchymal stem cells and insulin-like growth factor-I gene-enhanced mesenchymal stem cells improve structural aspects of healing in equine flexor digitorum superficialis tendons.

29 Sep 2009 Tendinitis remains a catastrophic injury among athletes. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have recently been investigated for use in the treatment of tendinitis. Previous work has demonstrated the value of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) to ... Read more...
