Definition of 'Insulin Resistance'

Diminished effectiveness of INSULIN in lowering blood sugar levels: requiring the use of 200 units or more of insulin per day to prevent HYPERGLYCEMIA or KETOSIS. It can be caused by the presence of INSULIN ANTIBODIES or the abnormalities in insulin receptors (RECEPTOR, INSULIN) on target cell surfaces. Effects of diet-induced weight gain on insulin sensitivity and plasma hormone and lipid concentrations in horses.

29 Sep 2009 OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of diet-induced weight gain on glucose and insulin dynamics and plasma hormone and lipid concentrations in horses. ANIMALS: 13 adult geldings. PROCEDURES: Horses were fed 200% of their digestible energy ... Read more...

Elevated first-trimester uric acid concentrations are associated with the development of gestational diabetes.

29 Sep 2009 OBJECTIVE: We sought to demonstrate that elevated first-trimester uric acid is associated with development of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). STUDY DESIGN: Uric acid was measured in 1570 plasma samples collected at mean gestational age of 8.9 ... Read more...

Importance of changes in adipose tissue insulin resistance to histological response during thiazolidinedione treatment of patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis.

29 Sep 2009 Pioglitazone treatment improves insulin resistance (IR), glucose metabolism, hepatic steatosis, and necroinflammation in patients with nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Because abnormal lipid metabolism/elevated plasma free fatty acids (FFAs) are ... Read more...
