Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumping - Research News and Information
Saturday, January 10, 2009
Definition of 'Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumping'Counterpulsation in which a pumping unit synchronized with the patient's electrocardiogram rapidly fills a balloon in the aorta with helium or carbon dioxide in early diastole and evacuates the balloon at the onset of systole. As the balloon inflates, it raises aortic diastolic pressure, and as it deflates, it lowers aortic systolic pressure. The result is a decrease in left ventricular work and increased myocardial and peripheral perfusion. |
Mechanical circulatory support: a clinical reality.
29 Sep 2008
Mechanical circulatory support is becoming an alternative therapeutic option for patients in cardiogenic shock or advanced cardiac failure who cannot be improved by maximal medical therapy. More than 30 years of engineering development and clinical ... Read more...

BACKGROUND: We investigated hemodynamic effects of intra-aortic balloon pumping (IABP) in in-situ and aorta-coronary (A-C) grafts during coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). METHODS: One hundred seventy-two grafts, including 84 in-situ left ... Read more...
Percutaneous ventricular assist devices for cardiogenic shock.
30 Aug 2008
Cardiogenic shock complicates up to 7% of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarctions and 2.5% of non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarctions, with an associated mortality of 50% to 70%. Primary cardiac pump failure is followed by secondary ... Read more...
