Definition of 'Ion Transport'

The movement of ions across energy-transducing cell membranes. Transport can be active, passive or facilitated. Ions may travel by themselves (uniport), or as a group of two or more ions in the same (symport) or opposite (antiport) directions.

Common names: Ion Transport; Transport, Ion; Ion Exchange, Intracellular; Exchange, Intracellular Ion; Intracellular Ion Exchange; Active Ion Transport; Ion Transport, Active; Transport, Active Ion; Uniport; Passive Ion Transport; Ion Transport, Passive; Symport; Ion Cotransport; Cotransport, Ion

Direct metal transfer between periplasmic proteins identifies a bacterial copper chaperone.

9 Oct 2008 Transition metals require exquisite handling within cells to ensure that cells are not harmed by an excess of free metal species. In gram-negative bacteria, copper is required in only small amounts in the periplasm, not in the cytoplasm, so a key ... Read more...

Conformationally gated metal uptake by apomanganese superoxide dismutase.

7 Oct 2008 Metal uptake by apomanganese superoxide dismutase in vitro is a complex process exhibiting multiphase "gated" reaction kinetics and a striking sigmoidal temperature profile that has led to a model of conformationally gated metal binding, requiring ... Read more...

Disruption of the CFTR gene produces a model of cystic fibrosis in newborn pigs.

24 Sep 2008 Almost two decades after CFTR was identified as the gene responsible for cystic fibrosis (CF), we still lack answers to many questions about the pathogenesis of the disease, and it remains incurable. Mice with a disrupted CFTR gene have greatly ... Read more...
