Definition of 'Killer Cells, Natural'

Bone marrow-derived lymphocytes that possess cytotoxic properties, classically directed against transformed and virus-infected cells. Unlike T-CELLS and B-CELLS, NK cells are not antigen specific. The cytotoxicity of natural killer cells is determined by the collective signaling of an array of inhibitory and stimulatory CELL SURFACE RECEPTORS. A subset of T-LYMPHOCYTES referred to as NATURAL KILLER T CELLS shares some of the properties of this cell type.

Natural killer cell counts are not different between patients with post-Lyme disease syndrome and controls.

8 Jun 2009 It has been reported that patients with "chronic Lyme disease" have a decreased number of natural killer cells, as defined by the CD57 marker. We performed immunophenotyping in 9 individuals with post-Lyme disease syndrome, 12 who recovered from ... Read more...

Model-free feedback design for a mixed cancer therapy.

29 Apr 2009 In this article, a model-free feedback control design is proposed for the drug administration in mixed cancer therapy. This strategy is very attractive because of the important issue of parameter uncertainties unavoidable when dealing with ... Read more...

Differential upregulation of chemokine receptors on CD56 NK cells and their transmigration to the site of infection in tuberculous pleurisy.

10 Jan 2009 Chemokines and their receptors orchestrate leukocyte recruitment and confer immunity during Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. The immunoregulatory and cytotoxic activities of natural killer (NK) cells are essential at the site of infection ... Read more...
