Definition of 'Kinins'

A generic term used to describe a group of polypeptides with related chemical structures and pharmacological properties that are widely distributed in nature. These peptides are AUTACOIDS that act locally to produce pain, vasodilatation, increased vascular permeability, and the synthesis of prostaglandins. Thus, they comprise a subset of the large number of mediators that contribute to the inflammatory response. (From Goodman and Gilman's The Pharmacologic Basis of Therapeutics, 8th ed, p588)

Cross talk between kinin and angiotensin II receptors in mouse abdominal aorta.

30 Aug 2009 Bradykinin (BK) is a vasorelaxant, algesic and inflammatory agent. Angiotensin II (AngII) is known to control vascular tone and promote growth, inflammation and artherogenesis. There is evidence for cross talking between BK and AngII receptors. ... Read more...

Kinin danger signals proteolytically released by gingipain induce Fimbriae-specific IFN-gamma- and IL-17-producing T cells in mice infected intramucosally with Porphyromonas gingivalis.

15 Aug 2009 Porphyromonas gingivalis, a Gram-negative bacterium that causes periodontitis, activates the kinin system via the cysteine protease R-gingipain. Using a model of buccal infection based on P. gingivalis inoculation in the anterior mandibular ... Read more...

Kallikrein-kinin system and fibrinolysis in hereditary angioedema due to factor XII gene mutation Thr309Lys.

29 Jun 2009 In a subgroup of hereditary angioedema (HAE) patients with normal C1-esterase inhibitor levels, HAE is caused by a Thr309Lys mutation in the coagulation factor XII (F12) gene. The aim of this study was to examine elements of the kallikrein-kinin ... Read more...
