Research News and Information
Definition of 'Mental Retardation'Subnormal intellectual functioning which originates during the developmental period. This has multiple potential etiologies, including genetic defects and perinatal insults. Intelligence quotient (IQ) scores are commonly used to determine whether an individual is mentally retarded. Lower bispectral index values in children who are intellectually disabled.
30 Oct 2009
BACKGROUND: Very few data are available on the use of bispectral index (BIS) monitoring in children who are intellectually disabled. Epileptiform electroencephalogram activity, underlying cerebral pathology, or anticonvulsant/spasmolytic therapy ... Read more...
Expanding the clinical and neuroradiologic phenotype of primary microcephaly due to ASPM mutations.
20 Sep 2009
OBJECTIVE: To determine the spectrum of clinical, neuropsychological, and neuroradiologic features in patients with autosomal recessive primary microcephaly (MCPH) due to ASPM gene mutations. METHODS: ASPM was sequenced in 52 unrelated MCPH ... Read more...
Focal cortical dysplasia type II: biological features and clinical perspectives.
30 Aug 2009
Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) type II is an important cause of drug-resistant epilepsy. Clinical presentation is variable, and depends on age of onset of seizures and the location and size of lesion. As FCD type II cannot be diagnosed with ... Read more...
