Definition of 'Mitochondria'

Semiautonomous, self-reproducing organelles that occur in the cytoplasm of all cells of most, but not all, eukaryotes. Each mitochondrion is surrounded by a double limiting membrane. The inner membrane is highly invaginated, and its projections are called cristae. Mitochondria are the sites of the reactions of oxidative phosphorylation, which result in the formation of ATP. They contain distinctive RIBOSOMES, transfer RNAs (RNA, TRANSFER); AMINO ACYL T RNA SYNTHETASES; and elongation and termination factors. Mitochondria depend upon genes within the nucleus of the cells in which they reside for many essential messenger RNAs (RNA, MESSENGER). Mitochondria are believed to have arisen from aerobic bacteria that established a symbiotic relationship with primitive protoeukaryotes. (King & Stansfield, A Dictionary of Genetics, 4th ed)

Kinetics of transport and phosphorylation of glucose in cancer cells.

29 Nov 2009 Metabolic control analysis of tumor glycolysis has indicated that hexokinase (HK) and glucose transporter (GLUT) exert the main flux control (71%). To understand why they are the main controlling steps, the GLUT and HK kinetics and the contents of ... Read more...

NF-kappaB independent activation of a series of proinflammatory genes by hydrogen sulfide.

30 Oct 2009 A stress response has the potential to induce greater resistance to subsequent stress damage. We tested whether hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S), an important signaling molecule, also used therapeutically, and known for detrimental effects, might induce a ... Read more...

Leptin attenuates hypoxia/reoxygenation-induced activation of the intrinsic pathway of apoptosis in rat H9c2 cells.

30 Oct 2009 Cardiomyocyte apoptosis is a component of cardiac remodeling that can contribute to heart failure in obesity. A role for leptin in mediating this process has been suggested and the objective of this work was to investigate the effect of leptin on ... Read more...
