Research News and Information

Definition of 'Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase 1'

A proline-directed serine/threonine protein kinase which mediates signal transduction from the cell surface to the nucleus. Activation of the enzyme by phosphorylation leads to its translocation into the nucleus where it acts upon specific transcription factors. p40 MAPK and p41 MAPK are isoforms.

Common names: Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase 1; Mitogen Activated Protein Kinase 1; Extracellular Signal-Regulated Kinase 2; Extracellular Signal Regulated Kinase 2; MAP Kinase 2; MAPK1 Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase; MAPK1 Mitogen Activated Protein Kinase; p42(Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase)

Cutting edge: Extracellular signal-related kinase is not required for negative selection of developing T cells.

13 Oct 2009 Signals initiated through the TCR during development can result in either survival and differentiation or cell death. High affinity signals that induce death elicit a robust yet transient activation of signaling pathways, including Erk, whereas low ... Read more...

[The transcription of the amyloid precursor protein and tryptophan 2,3-dioxygenase genes are increased by aging in the rat brain]

28 Sep 2009 Aging itself is considered as a major risk factor of dementia. The prevalence of the Alzheimer's disease (AD) is increasing exponentially after the age of 65 and doubles every 5 years. The major aim of our present research was to examine the effect ... Read more...

Loss of endogenous interleukin-12 activates survival signals in ultraviolet-exposed mouse skin and skin tumors.

30 Aug 2009 Interleukin-12 (IL-12)-deficiency promotes photocarcinogenesis in mice; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying this effect have not been fully elucidated. Here, we report that long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation resulted in ... Read more...
