Myocardial Ischemia - Mortality
Research News and Information

Definition of 'Myocardial Ischemia'

A disorder of cardiac function caused by insufficient blood flow to the muscle tissue of the heart. The decreased blood flow may be due to narrowing of the coronary arteries (CORONARY ARTERY DISEASE), to obstruction by a thrombus (CORONARY THROMBOSIS), or less commonly, to diffuse narrowing of arterioles and other small vessels within the heart. Severe interruption of the blood supply to the myocardial tissue may result in necrosis of cardiac muscle (MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION).

Mitral gradients and frequency of recurrence of mitral regurgitation after ring annuloplasty for ischemic mitral regurgitation.

29 Sep 2009 BACKGROUND: Undersized ring annuloplasty and surgical revascularization are commonly used to correct ischemic mitral regurgitation (MR), but published series have failed to demonstrate a benefit compared with revascularization alone. We hypothesized ... Read more...

Paraoxonase variants relate to 10-year risk in coronary artery disease: impact of a high-density lipoprotein-bound antioxidant in secondary prevention.

27 Sep 2009 OBJECTIVES: We investigated the effects of paraoxonase (PON)-1 variants on long-term clinical outcome in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). BACKGROUND: PON-1 is a potential therapeutic target to further reduce cardiovascular risk because ... Read more...

Intraoperative myocardial acidosis as a risk for hospital readmission after cardiac surgery.

30 Aug 2009 BACKGROUND: This study elucidates the relationship between intraoperative myocardial acidosis/ischemia and the risk of unplanned hospital readmissions within 30 days and 6 months after cardiac surgery. METHODS: Myocardial tissue pH (corrected to 37 ... Read more...
