Definition of 'Nerve Growth Factor'

NERVE GROWTH FACTOR is the first of a series of neurotrophic factors that were found to influence the growth and differentiation of sympathetic and sensory neurons. It is comprised of alpha, beta, and gamma subunits. The beta subunit is responsible for its growth stimulating activity.

Common names: Nerve Growth Factor; NGF; Nerve Growth Factor 1; Nerve Growth Factor beta Subunit; NGF-1beta; NGF 1beta; beta-Nerve Growth Factor; Factor, beta-Nerve Growth; beta Nerve Growth Factor; Nerve Growth Factor gamma Subunit; Nerve Growth Factor alpha Subunit

NGF is essential for hippocampal plasticity and learning.

31 Aug 2009 Nerve growth factor (NGF) is produced in the hippocampus throughout life and is retrogradely trafficked to septal cholinergic neurons, providing a potential mechanism for modulating cholinergic inputs and, thereby, hippocampal plasticity. To explore ... Read more...

NGF and its receptor system: a new dimension in the pathogenesis of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

30 Aug 2009 A contributing role of nerve growth factor (NGF)-mediated neuroimmunologic mechanisms has provided a new dimension in the understanding of various cutaneous and systemic inflammatory diseases. Recent evidence implicates NGF as a key mediator of ... Read more...

Redundancy of the effect of TGFbeta1 and beta-NGF on the second meiotic division of rat spermatocytes.

30 Jul 2009 We have previously shown that in cocultures of late pachytene/diplotene spermatocytes (PS/DS) with Sertoli cells, beta-nerve growth factor (beta-NGF) or transforming growth factor (TGFbeta1) regulates the second meiotic division by blocking ... Read more...
