Definition of 'Nerve Growth Factor'

NERVE GROWTH FACTOR is the first of a series of neurotrophic factors that were found to influence the growth and differentiation of sympathetic and sensory neurons. It is comprised of alpha, beta, and gamma subunits. The beta subunit is responsible for its growth stimulating activity.

Common names: Nerve Growth Factor; NGF; Nerve Growth Factor 1; Nerve Growth Factor beta Subunit; NGF-1beta; NGF 1beta; beta-Nerve Growth Factor; Factor, beta-Nerve Growth; beta Nerve Growth Factor; Nerve Growth Factor gamma Subunit; Nerve Growth Factor alpha Subunit

Nerve growth factor attenuates proliferation of astrocytes via the p75 neurotrophin receptor.

29 Sep 2009 The p75 neurotrophin receptor has been implicated in the regulation of multiple cellular functions that differ depending on the cell context. We have observed that p75(NTR) is strongly induced on astrocytes as well as neurons in the hippocampal CA3 ... Read more...

Characterization of CLP36/Elfin/PDLIM1 in the nervous system.

21 Sep 2009 CLP36, one of the alpha-Actinin Associated LIM Protein (ALP)/Enigma family proteins, has a wide tissue distribution, but little is known about its expression and role in the nervous system. We show here that CLP36 is expressed in sensory ganglia but ... Read more...

Axonal targeting of Trk receptors via transcytosis regulates sensitivity to neurotrophin responses.

14 Sep 2009 Axonal targeting of trophic receptors is critical for neuronal responses to extracellular developmental cues, yet the underlying trafficking mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we report that tropomyosin-related kinase (Trk) receptors for ... Read more...
