Research News and Information

Definition of 'Nerve Net'

A meshlike structure composed of interconnecting nerve cells that are separated at the synaptic junction or joined to one another by cytoplasmic processes. In invertebrates, for example, the nerve net allows nerve impulses to spread over a wide area of the net because synapses can pass information in any direction.

Common names: Nerve Net; Nerve Nets; Net, Nerve; Nets, Nerve; Neural Networks (Anatomic); Network, Neural (Anatomic); Networks, Neural (Anatomic); Neural Network (Anatomic)

What does the retrosplenial cortex do?

6 Oct 2009 The past decade has seen a transformation in research on the retrosplenial cortex (RSC). This cortical area has emerged as a key member of a core network of brain regions that underpins a range of cognitive functions, including episodic memory, ... Read more...

Optical analysis of circuitry for respiratory rhythm in isolated brainstem of foetal mice.

10 Sep 2009 Respiratory rhythms arise from neurons situated in the ventral medulla. We are investigating their spatial and functional relationships optically by measuring changes in intracellular calcium using the fluorescent, calcium-sensitive dye Oregon Green ... Read more...

Strength of prefrontal activation predicts intensity of suggestion-induced pain.

30 Aug 2009 Suggestion, a powerful factor in everyday social interaction, is most effective during hypnosis. Subjective evaluations and brain-imaging findings converge to propose that hypnotic suggestion strongly modulates sensory processing. To reveal the ... Read more...
