Nerve Net - Cytology
Research News and Information

Definition of 'Nerve Net'

A meshlike structure composed of interconnecting nerve cells that are separated at the synaptic junction or joined to one another by cytoplasmic processes. In invertebrates, for example, the nerve net allows nerve impulses to spread over a wide area of the net because synapses can pass information in any direction.

Common names: Nerve Net; Nerve Nets; Net, Nerve; Nets, Nerve; Neural Networks (Anatomic); Network, Neural (Anatomic); Networks, Neural (Anatomic); Neural Network (Anatomic)

Selective targeting of the dendrites of corticothalamic cells by thalamic afferents in area 17 of the cat.

2 Nov 2009 Pyramidal cells of layer 6 in cat visual cortex are the source of the corticothalamic projection, and their recurrent collaterals provide substantially more excitatory synapses in layer 4 than does the thalamic input. They have predominantly simple ... Read more...

Metaplasticity governs natural experience-driven plasticity of nascent embryonic brain circuits.

27 Oct 2009 During embryogenesis, brain neurons receiving the same sensory input may undergo potentiation or depression. While the origin of variable plasticity in vivo is unknown, it plays a key role in shaping dynamic neural circuit refinement. Here, we ... Read more...

Mrgprd-expressing polymodal nociceptive neurons innervate most known classes of substantia gelatinosa neurons.

19 Oct 2009 The Mas-related G-protein-coupled receptor D (Mrgprd) marks a distinct subset of sensory neurons that transmit polymodal nociceptive information from the skin epidermis to the substantia gelatinosa (SG, lamina II) of the spinal cord. Moreover, ... Read more...
