Definition of 'Neural Cell Adhesion Molecules'

Cell adhesion molecule involved in a diverse range of contact-mediated interactions among neurons, astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and myotubes. It is widely but transiently expressed in many tissues early in embryogenesis. Four main isoforms exist, including CD56; (ANTIGENS, CD56); but there are many other variants resulting from alternative splicing and post-translational modifications. Aberrant expression of class III beta-tubulin in basal cell carcinoma of the skin.

29 Sep 2009 Tubulin is a major component of microtubules. Class III beta-tubulin (beta III) is a neuron-associated beta-tubulin isotype and expressed in the normal central and peripheral nervous systems. According to a previous study, beta III is not expressed ... Read more...

Role of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF)-neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) interactions in induction of neurite outgrowth and identification of a binding site for NCAM in the heel region of GDNF.

7 Sep 2009 The formation of appropriate neuronal circuits is an essential part of nervous system development and relies heavily on the outgrowth of axons and dendrites and their guidance to their respective targets. This process is governed by a large array of ... Read more...

Culture system for rodent and human oligodendrocyte specification, lineage progression, and maturation.

30 Aug 2009 Here we document protocols for the production, isolation, and maintenance of the oligodendrocyte phenotype from rodent and human neural stem cells. Our unique method relies on a series of chemically defined media, specifically designed and carefully ... Read more...
