Research News and Information

Definition of 'Norepinephrine'

Precursor of epinephrine that is secreted by the adrenal medulla and is a widespread central and autonomic neurotransmitter. Norepinephrine is the principal transmitter of most postganglionic sympathetic fibers and of the diffuse projection system in the brain arising from the locus ceruleus. It is also found in plants and is used pharmacologically as a sympathomimetic.

Common names: Norepinephrine; Noradrenaline; Levarterenol; Levonorepinephrine; Norepinephrine, (+,-)-Isomer; Norepinephrine Hydrochloride, (+,-)-Isomer; Norepinephrine l-Tartrate (1:1), (+,-)-Isomer; Arterenol; Aventis Brand of Norepinephrine Hydrochloride; Levonor; Levophed; Abbott Brand of Levophed Bitartrate

Retrograde viral vector-mediated inhibition of pontospinal noradrenergic neurons causes hyperalgesia in rats.

12 Oct 2009 Pontospinal noradrenergic neurons form a component of an endogenous analgesic system and represent a potential therapeutic target. We tested the principle that genetic manipulation of their excitability can alter nociception using an adenoviral ... Read more...

BMP signaling regulates sympathetic nervous system development through Smad4-dependent and -independent pathways.

28 Sep 2009 Induction of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) from its neural crest (NC) precursors is dependent on BMP signaling from the dorsal aorta. To determine the roles of BMP signaling and the pathways involved in SNS development, we conditionally ... Read more...
