Optic Atrophy
Research News and Information
Definition of 'Optic Atrophy'Atrophy of the optic disk which may be congenital or acquired. This condition indicates a deficiency in the number of nerve fibers which arise in the RETINA and converge to form the OPTIC DISK; OPTIC NERVE; OPTIC CHIASM; and optic tracts. GLAUCOMA; ISCHEMIA; inflammation, a chronic elevation of intracranial pressure, toxins, optic nerve compression, and inherited conditions (see OPTIC ATROPHIES, HEREDITARY) are relatively common causes of this condition. |

[Observation on therapeutic effect of acupuncture for treatment of optic atrophy]
30 Aug 2009
OBJECTIVE: To search for an effective therapy for patients with optic atrophy to improve the visual function. METHODS: Thirty-eight cases (fifty-four affected eyes) of optic atrophy were treated with acupuncture, local points combined with points ... Read more...
Mitochondrial disorders of the nuclear genome.
29 Jun 2009
BACKGROUND: Mitochondrial myopathies are regulated by two genomes: the nuclear DNA, and the mitochondrial DNA. While, so far, most studies have dealt with mitochondrial myopathies due to deletions or point mutations in the mitochondrial DNA, a new ... Read more...
29 Apr 2009
OBJECTIVE: To compare the rates of global and sectoral neuroretinal rim area (NRA) and peripapillary atrophy area (PPAA) change in open-angle glaucoma patients and normal control subjects and to determine the relationship between rates of NRA and ... Read more...
