Research News and Information

Definition of 'Parathyroid Hormone'

A polypeptide hormone (84 amino acid residues) secreted by the PARATHYROID GLANDS which performs the essential role of maintaining intracellular CALCIUM levels in the body. Parathyroid hormone increases intracellular calcium by promoting the release of CALCIUM from BONE, increases the intestinal absorption of calcium, increases the renal tubular reabsorption of calcium, and increases the renal excretion of phosphates.

Rapamycin impairs trabecular bone acquisition from high-dose but not low-dose intermittent parathyroid hormone treatment.

29 Nov 2009 The osteo-anabolic effects of intermittent parathyroid hormone (PTH) treatment require insulin-like growth factor (IGF) signaling through the IGF-I receptor. A major downstream target of the IGF-I receptor (via Akt) is the mammalian target of ... Read more...

Lessons from thymic epithelial heterogeneity: FoxN1 and tissue-restricted gene expression by extrathymic, endodermally derived epithelium.

26 Sep 2009 Modeling of thymic epithelial differentiation has been guided by several important underlying assumptions. One is that within epithelial tissues derived from pharyngeal endoderm, FoxN1 expression is signature for the thymic epithelial lineage. ... Read more...

The influence of chronic renal failure on drug metabolism and transport.

21 Sep 2009 Chronic renal failure (CRF) has been shown, in animal models and clinical studies, to significantly reduce nonrenal clearance and to alter the bioavailability of predominantly metabolized drugs. Phase II reactions and drug transporters such as ... Read more...
