Phacoemulsification
Research News and Information
Definition of 'Phacoemulsification'A procedure for removal of the crystalline lens in cataract surgery in which an anterior capsulectomy is performed by means of a needle inserted through a small incision at the temporal limbus, allowing the lens contents to fall through the dilated pupil into the anterior chamber where they are broken up by the use of ultrasound and aspirated out of the eye through the incision. The small incision allows the surgeon to use very few or even no stitches to close the tiny wound. There is usually no need for hospitalization and patients may resume most activities within days. Progression of age-related macular degeneration after cataract surgery.
30 Oct 2009
OBJECTIVE: To document age-related macular degeneration (AMD) progression after cataract surgery. METHODS: Surgeons prospectively enrolled patients with nonneovascular AMD who were awaiting cataract surgery. Fluorescein angiography was performed ... Read more...
Contributions of the capsulorrhexis to straylight.
29 Sep 2009
OBJECTIVES: To quantify the effect of the capsulorrhexis on straylight and to determine optimal capsulorrhexis size. METHODS: Fifty-six pseudophakic eyes with intact capsulorrhexis were included in the study. Straylight was measured with a ... Read more...
Primary anterior chamber intraocular lens for the treatment of severe crystalline lens subluxation.
29 Sep 2009
Subluxated cataractous and clear lenses are commonly treated by limbal or pars plana lensectomy followed by primary or secondary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Adjunctive capsular prosthetic devices have facilitated lens removal and IOL ... Read more...
