Phencyclidine - Pharmacology
Research News and Information

Definition of 'Phencyclidine'

A hallucinogen formerly used as a veterinary anesthetic, and briefly as a general anesthetic for humans. Phencyclidine is similar to KETAMINE in structure and in many of its effects. Like ketamine, it can produce a dissociative state. It exerts its pharmacological action through inhibition of NMDA receptors (RECEPTORS, N-METHYL-D-ASPARTATE). As a drug of abuse, it is known as PCP and Angel Dust.

Common names: Phencyclidine; Angel Dust; Dust, Angel; 1-(1-Phenylcyclohexyl)piperidine; GP-121; GP 121; GP121; Serylan; Phencyclidine Hydrochloride; Sernyl; CL-395; CL 395; CL395; Phencyclidine Hydrobromide

Neurochemical changes in the rat prefrontal cortex following acute phencyclidine treatment: an in vivo localized (1)H MRS study.

30 Jul 2009 Acute phencyclidine (PCP) administration mimics some aspects of schizophrenia in rats, such as behavioral alterations, increased dopaminergic activity and prefrontal cortex dysfunction. In this study, we used single-voxel (1)H-MRS to investigate ... Read more...

Synthesis and evaluation of 1-(1-(Benzo[b]thiophen-2-yl)cyclohexyl)piperidine (BTCP) analogues as inhibitors of trypanothione reductase.

30 Jul 2009 Thirty two analogues of phencyclidine were synthesised and tested as inhibitors of trypanothione reductase (TryR), a potential drug target in trypanosome and leishmania parasites. The lead compound BTCP (1, 1-(1-benzo[b]thiophen-2-yl-cyclohexyl) ... Read more...

Subchronic effects of phencyclidine on dopamine and serotonin receptors: implications for schizophrenia.

18 May 2009 Changes in representative dopamine (D(1), D(2), and D(4)) and serotonin (5-HT(1A) and 5-HT(2A)) receptors that have been implicated in the pathophysiology and treatment of schizophrenia were autoradiographically quantified after subchronic ... Read more...
