Definition of 'Prefrontal Cortex'

The rostral part of the frontal lobe, bounded by the inferior precentral fissure in humans, which receives projection fibers from the mediodorsal nucleus of the thalamus. The prefrontal cortex receives afferent fibers from numerous structures of the diencephalon, mesencephalon, and limbic system as well as cortical afferents of visual, auditory, and somatic origin.

Resolving response, decision, and strategic control: evidence for a functional topography in dorsomedial prefrontal cortex.

19 Oct 2009 The dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (DMPFC) plays a central role in aspects of cognitive control and decision making. Here, we provide evidence for an anterior-to-posterior topography within the DMPFC using tasks that evoke three distinct forms of ... Read more...

Anodal transcranial direct current stimulation of the prefrontal cortex enhances complex verbal associative thought.

29 Sep 2009 The remote associates test (RAT) is a complex verbal task with associations to both creative thought and general intelligence. RAT problems require not only lateral associations and the internal production of many words but a convergent focus on a ... Read more...

The medial temporal lobe and the left inferior prefrontal cortex jointly support interference resolution in verbal working memory.

29 Sep 2009 During working memory retrieval, proactive interference (PI) can be induced by semantic similarity and episodic familiarity. Here, we used fMRI to test hypotheses about the role of the left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFG) and the medial temporal lobe ... Read more...
